On Saturday, July 28, 2018, WBC Lightweight champion Mikey Garcia (38-0, 30 KOs) will face yet another tough challenge as he takes on IBF Lightweight champion, Robert Easter Jr. (21-0, 14 KOs).
The two fighters went face to face on Saturday, June 9, 2018 before the Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares rematch.
Garcia, who bested Easter Jr.’s close friend Adrien Broner, will seek to add another victory over a top fighter on his way to pound-for-pound dominance and a potential matchup against Vasiliy Lomachenko.
“I got my fight on July 28, but there’s been a lot of talk about Lomachenko and me over the past year,” said Garcia. “If I get through Robert Easter Jr. I’d be unified champ and the only other fight that makes sense is Lomachenko.”
Easter Jr. has not looked all that great in his two previous fights against Denis Shafikov and Javier Fortuna, but many people believe he’ll be in tip-top shape and locked in for Garcia with the help of new trainer, Kevin Cunningham.
“There were some adjustments we needed to make. I was getting too comfortable. I had to do something to take me out of my comfort zone,” said Easter Jr. “Coach Cunningham was the guy to pull me in and get on my tail.”
